This is a commercial ad of MaraNatha. This commercial was released in September 2017 in United States. Under the title of “MaraNatha: Heartbreak”.
Hornet director Peter Sluszka helms “Too Good for Jelly” a fresh new campaign for MaraNatha, a producer of delicious and natural nut butters. In these hilarious spots, conceived by the NY based agency of Terri & Sandy, the focus is shifted from the product, and onto a heartbroken anti-hero, the loser in this battle of hearts, Jelly. This unconventional approach to the story is what first attracted Sluszka to the project, and is what makes the story so surprising and successful. With musical scores that include an awesomely fake 80’s ballad to a weepy piano track, these character driven films will pluck at all your emotions.
Created in stop motion, Jelly was first animated without a face; the animators were able to tell the story through body language and to convey the many moods and personality of a simple and humble piece of toast. Once the stories were laid out, Jelly’s face was added in 2D during the post-production phase. The 2D animation was graphic and expressive to keep the emotional feel of Jelly focused and dramatic. From tears to complete devastation, Jelly without nut butter is nothing.
Sluszka was thrilled with the opportunity to explore Jelly toast in a variety of scenarios from a lonely bar to a psychiatrist’s office, and especially walking solo in the rain. For the opening rain shots in “Heartbreak,” live action plates were combined with precisely composed and fabricated foreground set pieces. The exploration of the inner life of Jelly without peanut butter required digging deep and some serious soul searching…from tearful moments to angry frustration…the shared experience of heartbreak is deliciously explored in these sad tales of texts that never should have been sent, to late night contemplation of love lost. #TooGoodForJelly.
